The
American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute,
and American Heart Association endorse the following
recommendations for people looking to reduce their risk
for cancer of all types:
- Do
not smoke or chew tobacco
- Use
sunscreen, hats, and other protective clothing when
exposed to the sun.
- Get
regular exercise (moderate activity for 30 minutes
or more on most days of the week)
- Maintain
a healthy weight
- Drink
little to no alcohol (less than 1 ounce per day)
- Reduce
fat intake (to less than 30 percent of daily calories)
- Reduce
cholesterol (to 300 mg per day)
- Increase
carbohydrates (to 55 to 65 percent of daily calories)
- Reduce
protein (to 15 percent of daily calories)
- Increase
dietary fiber intake (to 20 to 30 g per day)
- Eat
five fruits/vegetables daily
- Minimize
salt intake (less than 6 g per day)
